How do you create engaging educational material for kids?
This project picked up where a previously published set of four reference books left off. The new 300 page reference book is a collection of re-told key Bible stories along with modern-day examples and in-depth definition and detail of terms, maps, explanations, and relatable questions. It is designed for kids 8 to 12 years old.
As the design leader on a diverse cross-functional team, our task was to figure out how to build on a carefully researched four-volume set published in the 80s. An outcome of our previous research, it was determined that customers were asking for products designed for this age group (8–12 year olds). One year of further research for this book, writing, and editing was conducted outside of our cross-functional team. The new volume offered an opportunity for in-depth interactivity. Our team decided that all content would be included in one book to make it easier to use.

The goal was to make the stories easy to understand, and provide an outstanding source of information. Due to budget constraints, no new illustrations were created. Instead, colorful graphic elements were added to liven each layout and to better visually organize the information. Our team gained a better understanding and empathy for the target users of this book during our detailed user interviews, which included parents, teachers, and children. I worked closely with the illustrator to create lively layouts and illustrations balanced with modern playful typography to keep the reader’s attention.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
The flexibility and interactivity of the layout of information offered the opportunity for this book to be converted to a digital form. SME input enabled us to create a dynamic version modeled from the printed book. Check out the case study to learn more about how this digital transformation developed.
