This colorful historical biography is a lighter read for children ages 12 to 17. However, we knew from the beginning that all ages would take interest in the book. The book contains many images from the era and also includes detailed sidebars with relevant historical information and definitions.

DESIGN COLLABORATION

I worked closely with the author to ensure that the book would resonate with our target audience. Careful attention to detail was given to the typography, size of the type, leading, composition, sidebar content, and imagery. The cover was changed from its original conception due to the feedback from our in-house focus groups. We were pleased with the end result.

The simple design depicts the title eloquently without being overbearing. The interior pages contain many photos, illustrations, and color-coded sidebars with explanations and details. While the book was originally targeted towards a high-school aged audience, it became popular among older audiences alike. Its wide popularity required to a second printing within two months of its release, and later, translations.

GLOBAL FOCUS

In 2017, this book's popularity in English warranted translations into Spanish and Portuguese in order to reach additional markets. Since our product team knew early-on that translations were a possibility, I was able to keep that in mind when designing the cover, selecting the typefaces and colors, and including indexi and glossary tagging. I found the layouts for the translations challenging, since the images, graphics, and sidebars all needed to correspond and visually interact with each other. The process entailed diligent collaboration with the translators to get the layouts and composition just right.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN

I was pleased that the design of this book won an “Honorable Mention” in the 56th Annual New England Book Show. Our efforts paid off!
